Before you fire up the griddle, your trailer has to clear three separate authorities. Here is what each one asks for in Atlanta.
Fulton County — or DeKalb, depending on where your base sits — requires three separate applications: the mobile unit permit, the Base of Operations application, and, if you plan to work outside the county, the application for additional counties. On top of that come the mobile unit location listing, the property use agreement, and the toilet use agreement.
Georgia does not allow a mobile unit to operate without its own fixed base. It has to sit close enough for daily trips to dump wastewater and refill potable water, and at minimum it needs a dump station or mop sink, a handwashing sink, and a potable water tap. Sharing a base or equipment with another operator is not permitted. A base at your home is allowed only where local zoning permits it and the area is completely separate from residential use — an outbuilding, for example.
To vend in Atlanta’s public right of way you need a City of Atlanta business license (filed through ATLCORE), a public vending food truck permit, and your county health permit. Fees run $495 per year: $75 application, $350 electronic reservation, $50 background check, and a one-time $20 fingerprinting fee. After that you register with Street Food Finder, the required platform for booking locations and time slots.
Since January 1, 2023, the permit from the county where your base is located is recognized statewide in Georgia. You no longer need a new permit for every county — just authorization before you start operating outside your own.
